Brown University Comedy Conference

What: A two day conference hosted at Brown, featuring six visiting student comedy groups from colleges in the Northeast. Friday, April 7 is a showcase of the student groups followed by the headliner, comedian Brandon Wardell of Viceland and Comedy Central. On Saturday, April 8, there will be private workshops for the comedy groups followed by an open panel on careers in comedy, hosted by professional comedians and comedy writers like Frank Lesser, Rachel Knobelman, Jordan Carlos, and Eric Cunningham. All events are free and require Brown/RISD ID.

Headliner: Brandon Wardell – a 24 year old comedian named Rolling Stone’s “Hot Comedian” of 2016. He is known for his active (and hilarious) Twitter and Hot Takes with Brandon Wardell on Comedy Central. He has also appeared on @midnight, Adam Devine’s House Party, and The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

Frank Lesser attended Brown University and concentrated in film. He joined Comedy Central as a writer for the Colbert Report in 2005, for which he has won four Emmy’s. He has written for The New York Times, Slate, McSweeney’s, and The Washington Post.

Rachel Knobelman graduated from Brown and began her career at The Daily Show before moving to SNL. She now produces various shows on the Food Network.

Jordan Carlos is the third panelist who graduated from Brown. After graduating, he pursued stand-up and went on to play Colbert’s “black friend” on The Colbert Report. He has also appeared as a panelist and reporter on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.

Eric Cunningham is a comedian very active in the comedy troupe the Upright Citizens Brigade, and he does sketch writing for Comedy Central and MTV.

Patti Harrison of Seriously.TV is a co-host of “It’s a Guy Thing” at Union Hall. She is a self-identified “TransfemQueerEmotionalSupportRat.”

Six visiting student groups: Bloomers (UPenn), Boston University Stand Up, Hammerkatz (NYU), Improvidence (Brown/RISD), Jimmy’s Travelling All Stars, This is Pathetic (both from Emerson College, where you can receive your bachelors in comedy), The Skits (Cornell)
